One hundred fifty thousand French francs in 1937 would be worth about $98,000 today. It was no small sum, but Picasso donated several times that much to the Spanish Republic in the course of the civil war, and more afterward, privately, to its refugees. On Aub’s authority, then, the francs exchanged hands to establish ownership.

In May as well, Picasso responded to rumors circulating in Paris that he was pro-Franco with his first public statement of political beliefs:

The Spanish struggle is the fight of reaction against the people, against freedom. My whole life as an artist has been nothing more than a continuous struggle against reaction and the death of art. How could anybody think for a moment that I could be in agreement with reaction and death? When the rebellion began, the legally elected and democratic republican government of Spain appointed me director of the Prado Museum, a post which I immediately accepted. In the panel on which I am working which I shall call Guernica, and in all my recent works of art, I clearly express my abhorrence of the military caste which has sunk Spain in a sea of suffering and death.
